Info by NUFFGlobal participant Bai Yunwen, Beijing, China

On 8th December 2007, around 1000 Chinese youths with solar generation from 24 universities of 20 Chinese provinces participated in a joint action for climate, with the unified message of ‘1 kwh saving, our future cooling’ by support of China solar generation project. Each of the local youth groups launched traditional campaigning, lobbying, stands, and media work using regional culture featuring landmarks.

  • In front of Heaven temple, Beijing, a ‘Cool’ kite was let off with the wish of wind power.
  • In Northern China, they went skating, cycling, wind farm visiting… asking for a reduction in fossil fuel burning and driving.
  • Students from West of china, made a model earth, and inserted trees to signify reforestation.
  • In south of China, 120 students formed the words: ‘CO2↓’ to represent a need for further action on energy efficiency. In eastern China, photo exhibitions of renewable energy and a show table for public outreach were set up, delivering messages of the threat of climate change.

These images of actions were collected and sent to the Greenpeace volunteers in Bali who set up a youth stand as delegates to show politicians, scientists and stakeholders that Chinese youths were acting for climate.
This joint event got some national media coverage by regional XinHua news agencies with the message that’ Further more, in 2008 these participants in youth action committed to engage the public to act, starting from changing home light bulbs to CFL, which was an energy efficiency project launched by Greenpeace China, for a real Green Beijing Olympics.’
