NEWS LETTER #7

Congratualtion to “The Fridge”!

A short festival report by Daniel Alegi

“The Fridge” wins the prize for the best film at the international animated film competition at Cinemambiente in Torino, Italia.

I just returned from presenting NUFFGlobal films in Italy, at Torino Cinemambiente Environmental Film festival.
Six films were selected from the 15 that resulted from our idea competition in 2006-2007. The winner of last year's NUFFGlobal, "The Fridge", by Lucie Stamfestova from Czech Republic, was also in the running for the "Best animation" film prize in Torino and won!

It was an honour for me to represent films from the NUFFGlobal project outside of Norway. As a member of the selection jury, I had seen these films as short pitches full of hope. Now they were on the wide-screen, for a packed audience, and at 10:30 PM!

Every individual film was much appreciated. And their mixed origin was also impressive, as the NUFFGlobal logo and jingle preceded documentary, fiction, animated and experimental films from Gaza, Canada, Germany, Nigeria. The nature of the NUFFGlobal project celebrates diverse voices from global youth telling local stories, creating a global echo.

In 2006 we received almost 200 idea applications for funding, and the quality of the NUFFGlobal film package is excellent! We are sure more and more films will be chosen by other festivals, and hope to have even more NUFFGlobal filmmakers present at the festival screenings.

The NUFFGlobal mission to support youth filmmakers in "making movies that matter" was appreciated as a special contribution because before there had never been a standalone category for youth film, let alone a flood of youth films together. The NUFF vision joins youth action and climate and global change action together, putting the energy of change in motion, and giving new voice a chance to be heard loud and clear.

The festival was opened by the "11th Hour" narrated by Leonardo Di Caprio and with the appearance NUFFGlobal ambassador Wangari Maathai. They also screened the documentary "Gitmo" by Erik Gandini, a story about Guantanamo Bay. An ex-detainee from the US interrogation centre in Cuba was also at the screening, to talk about his experience. Erik Gandini is one of the NUFFGlobal ambassadors, professionals who make their experience available to our project.
